Biography
Gladys is a devoted educator who believes that students learn best in schools that promote diversity, equity, and mutual respect. She also believes that students benefit greatly when the academic instruction they receive is rigorous, engaging, and culturally responsive. Gladys is a product of Wake County Public School System. After graduating from Millbrook High School, she attended North Carolina Central University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education(K-6). She began her teaching career as a third grade teacher in the Beaufort County School District in Beaufort, South Carolina. This experience directly exposed her to the inequities and racial disparities that existed within the communities in which her students lived and propelled her to advocate for equitable opportunities for all students from under-served populations.
After returning to Wake County, Gladys taught third and fourth grade for several years at Brooks Museums Magnet Elementary School. Over the course of her career, she has held various teacher leadership roles such as mentor for beginning teachers, grade level chair, cooperating teacher for student teachers, co-chair of the School Improvement Team, and an active member of the Leadership Team. Because of her relentless commitment to the success of all students, Gladys was recognized as Teacher of the Year for Brooks in 2006, 2011 and 2016 by her peers. Likewise, she is passionate about supporting and increasing the professional capacity of teachers and promoting strong partnerships between families and schools. Currently, Gladys is a graduate student in the Wake Principal Leadership Program at North Carolina State University and a principal resident at West Millbrook Magnet Middle School. She is thrilled to be a part of the West Millbrook family and honored to be mentored under the phenomenal leadership of Principal, Kelly Aman.
Leadership Vision Statement
As an optimistic school leader, my vision is to build sustainable relationships with all community stakeholders to create a school culture that fosters equity, promotes servant leadership, and inspires individuals to reach their full potential. I will work continuously with teachers and other school leaders to improve student achievement, close the opportunity gap for children of diverse backgrounds, and equip all students with the tools they need to face today’s challenges. |
