First Impression
As I gazed up at the main office building of West Millbrook Magnet Middle School from its long, windy driveway, it immediately reminded me of a hidden gem securely nestled into a neighborhood surrounded by towering oak and pine trees. Once I entered the office, the receptionist and lead secretary kindly greeted me and offered me a seat. The office was tidy and organized and contained a few seats to accommodate parents, students, and guests. The combination of natural and artificial light created a calm feeling throughout the space along with its attractive aroma of lavender air freshener. While I toured this school’s campus with the principal, I was amazed at the level of warmth and friendliness that was extended to me by several staff members and students. Overall, the atmosphere of this school was cheerful and inviting, and I excited to become a part of this dynamic school community.

Internal and External School Communication
A variety of internal communication methods are used at West Millbrook Magnet Middle School to keep all staff members and students informed. Email is the most convenient form of communication used. Every weekend, the principal emails a school-wide memo to the staff entitled "The Principal's Message". The purpose of this memo is to keep staff members abreast of weekly events, share reminders, and reiterate school/district policies and procedures. Each assistant principal sends out a weekly or biweekly newsletter to his/her grade level team that includes meeting dates, instructional information, grade level celebrations, and shout-outs. At the end of first period every day, the receptionist recites the Pledge of Allegiance, shares morning announcements, and calls students to the office for important messages and to receive items. At the end of fifth period, the afternoon announcements and important information for students are shared. Text messaging, leaving notes in mailboxes, and using the walkie -talkie are other methods of internal communication used by staff. Our students receive important information from their homeroom and Becoming I.B. teachers. In addition, they are given a syllabus by each of their core and non-core teachers that outline course expectations, units of study, standards, and upcoming assessments.
The administrative team and staff use multiple forms of external communication to notify students, families, and the general public. Our school website displays an abundance of vital information such as "The Principal's Message", a calendar of events, access to teacher websites, curriculum resources, digital resources, advertisements of upcoming school events, and district information. Principal Aman and our lead secretary use "School Messenger" to communicate with families via phone and email. Paper versions of newsletters and handouts are sent home with students also. Teacher websites and Google Classroom are updated weekly or bi-weekly to provide students and parents with important information regarding homework and class work assignments, study aids, and upcoming assessments. Lastly, West Millbrook staff uses Facebook and Twitter for external communication.
